Ponte Cultura Workshop 2007
St Dézéry, France

Infos:   deutsch   ·   english   ·   français   ·   portugués

There is imminent danger that, due to high consumption, thoughtless use and extravagant waste our precious drinking water will be in short supply - not just in a few countries, but worldwide.

This frightening prospect has given Ponte Cultura, the European-Brazilian Cultural Exchange Association, the incentive to dedicate the 2007 Artist’s workshop, held in the South of France, to the theme “Water”.

The principle topic in talks, discussions, recitals and performances will be the “Water” - its existence, its use, its significance to life, its contribution to our culture and its link between ours and other cultures.

The group will be seeking out water ‘sources’, many of them exhausted and dry, such as streams, aqueducts, and canals as places to work. It is hoped that the artistic inspiration derived from these places, that the artists will employ in their creations, will help to sensitise the public to the preciousness of water in the world.

Notes:

The main theme of this workshop is the preoccupation with WATER in the world. Through the workshop we hope that the artists will be motivated and the theme will provide ideas for the Ponte Cultura exhibitions in 2008 Brazil and 2008 Nürnberg in Germany. The theme of water will be developed in future events.

An introductory paper to the workshop will be sent to participants, by Dr Inga Thieme.

Dr Inga Thieme a Brazilian Anthropologist was born in Germany, and will talk on Celtic traditions associated with water.

Birke Griesshammer, from Nürnberg, researches into old myths, particularly of Celtic origin.

Henri Hairabédian, an Armenian artist who lives near St Dézéry, in Dions - a village in the hills near the Gardon River, is a sculptor who uses the stones from the river as his primary material.

Erik Koch is a conceptual artist, associated with Ponte Cultura for many years, lives and works in the garrigue (the rough uncultivated land in the Gardon region).

Patricia Vallet will perform a contemporary dance, on the workshop theme of Water, in the garden, chez Stüve. All artists are invited to sketch, draw, paint etc during the performance.

Capitelles are very old stone 'buildings'. They are domed, or egg-shaped, shelters, built from the local limestone rocks, to give shelter to shepherds and possibly the newborn lambs. Their shape is one of the earliest forms of manmade buildings. They are also seen in Calabria, where they are known as 'trulli', and are known in the Middle East.

Bornègre: the source here will probably be dry, so a performance 'Missing Water' by the artists would be welcomed during our visit on Tuesday 5 June. This fits perfectly with our theme on the scarceness of water in the world. This region has official droughts declared each summer.

The Exhibition at Blauzac has "Empreints" as its title, and is an ongoing part of the workshop. We invite the artists to bring extra works from their ateliers to show their own career "Empreints" (footprints / fingerprints / marks); these works do not need to be related to the workshop theme of water. There is room for one or two framed works only from each artist, also needed are: title, size, date, price and hook or cord ready for hanging ( if chassis are needed please let Marianne know  in advance). The works will be hung using an already installed system of nylon 'wires' and 'hooks'. No nails will be permitted in the walls.

Field-painting is to be a group experience of 'painting' in nature - the local environment. Ponte Cultura will provide paper and colours. We will be choosing shady places, but please bring sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, long-sleeved shirt (sun protection is very necessary), stool or other for sitting. Cameras and sound recorders would be useful as the scenery is fabulous and always full of bird and cigale song.

The meals (including picnics) will be provided by Ponte Cultura and will be prepared by Malika, a friend.
