Sarah Wood, St. Quentin la
Potéry (France)
Interview in February 2002 with PONTE CULTURA
1) When did you start with art?
Very young, as a child. I was always drawing and knew that this was what
I wanted to do.
2) What is your way
into art? (formation, influences, inspirations etc.)
At 16 I started at art school in England, which lasted 5 years altogether,
where I experimented with many techniques, including ceramics, photography,
printmaking, as well as my main subject - painting. I had many influences.
Then I spent a year in Cyprus where I started to paint landscape.
3) Which materials
do you use actually?
Since the Belem workshop, powered earth pigments, with acrylic base, charcoal
and natural found objects.
Before that mainly oil paints and charcoal.
4) Describe your
actual work
Mainly red/yellow ochre colours, with bits of writing and leaves, papers,
etc. stuck on. I like to build up layers and different textures, scraping
the paint back. I try to keep an element of landscape somewhere in the
work too.
5) What do you expect
from the Brazilian - European artists encounter at Nürnberg?
To see how other artists work and learn from them. To see the cultural
differences.
6) Do you see any
positive aspects in group work?
Yes. I think one feels stronger and perhaps more confident being part
of a group. I think a group's creative capacity is probably greater than
an individual´s.
