‘Children of this world’ / ‘family bonds’
When I started on my path to being an artist in Brazil, we were under a military dictatorship. That disturbed me a lot, even though I was only 14 years old. My work still holds that strong social connotation. As I grew more mature I moved away slightly. In drawing and painting I began searching for knowledge and technique as a priority. Some years ago, I returned to my search for the political basis of my earlier years, a more expressive representation of my feelings towards our time.
We are living in a very delicate time, which is socially very intense and I don’t think artists can turn their backs on it. I think art should express its time. In this installation Clemens and I discuss deceleration as a good way of rescuing our identities and self-knowledge. We are trying to disturb by showing the strange reality of extreme - unforgivable poverty, sharing its space with over-consumerism; in a society searching for a solution to the paradox of being civilized and yet living with the discrepancy of real, extreme poverty. |
